BBC Knowledge is a British television channel that broadcasts educational, cultural, and documentary programmes. Launched on 1 June 1999, the channel lasted for four years and was replaced by BBC Four. However, if you’re a BBC fan, you’ve probably already seen its programmes. If not, then you may want to check out what’s new on BBC Four. Here are some things you should know about BBC Knowledge. Let’s get started!

BBC Knowledge’s earliest shows incorporated interactive elements. For example, Front Room incorporated the nascent world wide web and allowed viewers to chat and send e-mails to the show’s hosts. Eventually, the show was axed, and French Fix was replaced with German Fix, which was presented by Jenny Eclair in the studio and Sally Gray on location. Other BBC Knowledge programmes have included Have Words, which portrayed a series of interactive debates.

In April 2000, BBC Knowledge shifted to a more upmarket format, repeating a large number of BBC1 and BBC2 programmes. Weekdays were theme-based, with programmes about business, history, and languages and culture. Weekends featured some children’s programmes. The channel was replaced by BBC4 in March 2002. In 2007, the name of BBC Knowledge was revived for an unrelated commercial channel. If you’re a fan of education, you might want to check out BBC Knowledge.

BBC Knowledge also continued to offer access to the brightest British talent. In the early days, the channel featured a programme called Culture Fix, which was described as a fun and accessible guide to the world of art. The show featured Peter Curran and explored everything from pop art to contemporary dance. Culture Fix also included special effects, interior design, and photojournalism. Eventually, it switched over to digital terrestrial. The channel’s schedule was updated to include episodes that aired after BBC4.

The BBC Knowledge series featured several notable guests such as JG Ballard, Kofi Annan, Philip Pullman, and Stephen Hawking. It was also host to the MASTERCLASS series, where different guests shared their knowledge and expertise in various areas of the arts. Other notable guests included documentary makers Molly Dineen, pop artist Peter Blake, film director Mike Figgis, poet Andrew Motion, and photographer Eamonn McCabe.
